What is Lavender Choir?

Lavender Choir is an all ages, all voices, inclusive choir.

Our choir is the perfect place for anyone who loves singing. We sing all kinds of music, ranging from traditional choir music to acapella songs, pop, showtunes and more.

We meet Mondays, 6-8pm at the Equality Community Center (15 Casco St., Portland, ME).

Our Spring/Summer Season is in session! New members can join up until the end of rehearsal Monday April 17th. Register for this season HERE!

FAQ:

Who can join? All ages, identities, and voices are welcome in Lavender Choir, regardless of prior musical experience.

Are there choir dues? It costs $10 per semester for music and other expenses, but assistance is available! Dues can be brought to River at the end of rehearsals at the beginning of the season.

Is there a strict attendance policy? It’s best for the choir if you can be at most rehearsals, but you will not be penalized if you are unable to attend a rehearsal, or if you have to drop from the choir and rejoin the following season.

How do I know what part I sing? All our singers learn the part of their choice (soprano, alto, tenor, or bass) and the octave that is comfortable for their own vocal range. If you’re unsure of your range, our choir director, Lauren, will help you.

Do I need to know how to read sheet music already? Nope! If you do, that’s awesome, but our goal is to make this choir accessible to everyone, regardless of prior experience.

MEET OUR CHOIR DIRECTOR: Lauren Murphy

Lauren (she/her) has been teaching music since 2013 after graduating from the University of Southern Maine with a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education. She also enjoys directing and music directing musical theater in the public school setting as well as in community theater productions. She also enjoys performing and is currently a member of the Portland based a cappella group “The Pine State Pitches”.

Lauren Murphy is married, identifies as bisexual, and came out in June of this year. She has spent all of her teaching career working with adolescent changing voices, including transitioning voices. This summer she took a class entitled “Thinking Outside the Voice Box” at the University of Southern Maine. She recently began thinking that it would be really cool to start a community LGBTQIA+ choir when she happened to get a message about potentially leading this group! She is interested in fostering community through choral music and bringing the Lavender Choir to life!
